Light shelf wear to the book; a bit more to the tips, corners, and edges of the rubbed jacket with several short closed tears and shallow chips. Previous owner's name and date, else clean and unmarked. First printing, no others noted. From the flap: "Revealing a thorough and specific knowledge of dramatic expression, he presents a wealth of of material in such a way that ministers, church organizations, or any interested laymen will be encouraged to use drama for more significant worship in the church." From his obituary: "Dr. Ehrensperger had three distinct careers. He headed the creative arts and religion programs at Boston University and he was an author and journalist....In 1947, Dr. Ehrensperger wrote “Conscience on Stage,” which was a pioneering work on religion and drama, and in 1963 he produced “Religious Drama: Ends and Means.” In the nineteen twenties, he visited the Soviet Union to study the Moscow Art Theater and he spent part of a year in Germany observing the directing of Max Reinhardt...Dr. Ehrensperger also spent considerable time in India, the South Pacific, Latin America and Africa. He was a friend of Mohandas K. Gandhi and other leaders of the Indian independence movement...In 1961 he was named chairman of Boston University's School of Theology and of the Fine Arts theater division and director of the Boston University theater, where in his first season he examined the changing role of the hero in plays ranging from “Oedipus Rex” to modern drama. He produced the original play text of Arthur Miller's “The Crucible." The Yale School of Drama gave him a citation for his 40 years' work in drama."
