Herbert was a poet, priest, theologian, orator during the reigns of James I and Charles I. In her preface Asals states: "Herbert found, I believe, a method of predication which transcends the usual grammatical subject-predicate format; and his poetry became the non-prosaic predication of that 'is' which is the being of God, existing beyond time and the time-bound form of sentence structure."
