Light shelf wear to tips, corners, and edges of the book, the letter H is stamped to the front endpaper; a bit more to the jacket which has a closed tear and three small chips. First printing according to Toledano guide. From Wikipedia: 'William Theodore "Ted" de Bary (1919 – 2017) was an American Sinologist and East Asian literary scholar who was a professor and administrator at Columbia University for nearly 70 years." de Bary edited this work which ahs contributions by A. L. Basham, Leon Hurvitz, and Ryusaku Tsunoda. The three were leading scholars in Indian, Chinese and Japanese religion and culture respectively. It is a title in The Readings In Oriental Thought series of which de Bary was the general editor.
