Forewords by Robert H. Davis, Irving S. Cobb, Grantland Rice, George H. Lorimer, and L. B. Yates, respectively. Scarce, the WorldCat locates four sets in academic libraries. Charles Emmett Van Loan (1876-1919) was a very popular American sports writers and humorist. From his obituary: "Charles E. Van Loan was born In San Jose, Cal., June 29, 1876. He entered the newspaper profession when he joined the staff of the Los Angeles Morning Herald. Later he joined the Los Angeles Examiner sporting staff and was transferred to the New York Evening Journal. In 1915 Van Loan suffered a broken arm in an automobile accident. This injury caused him trouble and is given as the primary cause of his fatal illness. Van Loan, with his wife and two children, Richard, 12 years old, and Virginia, 14 years old, left here (Sausalito, CA) last November to accept the position of associate editor of the Saturday Evening Post."
