Theodore Roosevelt in his first book, The Naval War of 1812, termed the Battle of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain "the greatest naval battle of the war" . Of MacDonough he wrote "Down to the time of the Civil War he is the greatest figure in our naval history." MacDonoughserved with distinction on the U.S.S. Constellation in naval operations against Tripoli during the First Barbary War. In October, 1812 then Lt. MacDonough was assigned to Burlington, Vermont to command U.S. naval forces on Lake Champlain. During his service he successfully repulsed repeat attacks as the British tried to wrest back territory in New England and New York lost during the Revolution. MacDonough went on to decisively defeat the British at the Battle of Plattsburgh, driving them back to Canada and putting an end to serious encroachments via Lake Champlain. His actions left no grounds for any claims by the British for any territory when the Ghent peace conference convened on December 24. For his success in forcing the retreat of the enemy back into Canada Macdonough was duly promoted to the rank of Captain. He was also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal then a military award perhaps the highest honors bestowed by the government at the time. During the 20th century four Destroyers and a Liberty Ship were named for him. Books and other items ship promptly with a tracking number and (generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable.
