Royall Tyler was an American jurist and playwright. The Contrast was the first professionally produced American stage comedy. The play's first public showing was shortly after George Washington's inauguration and Washington and several members of the First Congress attended. The play was well-received, and Tyler became a literary celebrity. Tyler was also known in early America as a libertine, squandering his fortune, drinking to excess and fathering several children with many different women including one or two with his soon to be mother-in-law as well as her underage daughter whom he married in haste. He went on to become the Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. Most items ship with tracking numbers and (generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.
