First printing, no others noted. Bernice Slote was well known as editor, poet, teacher, scholar, and critic. In 1946 she joined the faculty of the English Department at the University of Nebraska, where she taught literature and writing. This her first book won the Explicator Award for the best book of literary analysis in English or American Literature.The Nebraska born Slote was best known as a scholar of her fellow Nesbraskan, Willa Cather.
